When Alumni Serve, Communities Thrive
See how Emory alumni who volunteer in their communities build connections, support local causes, and bring Emory’s values to life.
For years, Emory alumni volunteers have shown up in meaningful ways — sharing their skills, lending a hand, and creating real change where it matters most.
While alumni can stay connected to Emory in many ways, volunteering in their own communities offers something especially powerful. This simple act creates an impact close to home while keeping alumni connected to Emory’s values.
One recent example came during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, when alumna Nkechi Obiofuma 20L co-led an Emory Cares project with the Washington, DC, alumni network. Alongside Chelsea Magnant 10C, Obiofuma helped organize a service opportunity with ReDelicious — a food distribution organization focused on reducing food waste.
Approximately 16 Emory alumni volunteers participated in the project, assisting with food deliveries, setting up market areas, managing crowd control, and serving hot tea to volunteers and community members.
The partnership was unusual, as ReDelicious typically collaborates with food businesses rather than alumni groups — highlighting the unique role alumni networks can play in addressing community needs.
For Obiofuma, the experience underscored how alumni can lead with intention right where they are. She encourages fellow alumni to start small, tap into their local networks, and build momentum together.
“These opportunities represent Emory’s value of community service outside of Atlanta,” she shared.
